The story of the tower of Babel is recorded in Genesis 11:1-9. After Noah’s flood, the people wanted build a city and a tower with its top in the heavens to make a name for themselves. God came down to look at the city and the tower and remarked that as long as they are one people with one language, nothing will be impossible. God confused their language and semantics, so they could not cooperate with each other anymore. They then stopped building the city and groups of people were scattered over the face of the earth. The city is now called Babylon.
Within every large organization you also have groups with their own language, habits and their own bible (guidelines) . They also have difficulty to understand each other and to share their deliverable's. They also start large projects and leave large undocumented configurations behind...... Examples of these groups are;
- Business architects - They use the Osterwalder Business Model Canvas as their guideline for business and operation model innovations
- Enterprise architects - They use TOGAF as their guideline for the rationalization of the enterprise architecture
- Solution managers - They use the ALM handbooks as their guideline for the documentation of their project solutions
- ICT support managers - They use the ITIL foundation as their guideline for the (pro-active) support of template operations
- Risk managers - They use the COSO framework as their guideline for the management of corporate governance and industry compliance
- Operational excellence managers - They use Toyota LEAN management as their guideline for value stream reporting & operational excellence
- Transformation portfolio managers - They use Corporate Portfolio Management as their guideline for portfolio management optimization
All these groups have many differences, but they also have a lot in common like the E2E processes. To improve the integration and interaction between these groups the following ADM Business Transformation life-cycle is designed;
If the commonalities can be shared and the differences can be cared for, this could save costs and also improve the quality. To make this synergy work the E2E business process architecture could be the basis for new commonly accepted guidelines in which all groups can work together.
The ADM business transformation life-cycle and guidelines will be different for every company but a starting point can be found in the following Slide Share presentation; Book summary; business transformation in operation(s)
